The Benefits and Challenges of Joining Music Competitions

With competition season upon us, musicians from all over the globe are gearing up to showcase their talents and passion for music. Whether you’re a pianist preparing for the Fifth Amason Award Pop Piano International Competition or a drummer eyeing the Asian Supreme Drum Competition, the journey ahead promises growth, excitement, and invaluable experiences. Participating in music competitions can offer a wealth of benefits, from skill enhancement and constructive feedback to networking opportunities and personal growth. However, it’s also important to navigate the challenges that come with these high-stakes events. Let’s explore the multifaceted world of music competitions, examining both the rewards and the hurdles, to ensure a balanced and fulfilling competitive journey.

Benefits of Participating in Music Competitions

Participating in music competitions, regardless of the instrument, offers numerous benefits that significantly contribute to personal and professional growth. These events can serve as catalysts for skill enhancement, as the rigorous practice required improves technical mastery and overall musicianship. Additionally, performing in front of an audience enhances stage presence and boosts performance confidence, essential traits for any aspiring musician.

One of the key advantages of competitions is the constructive feedback participants receive. Experienced judges provide valuable critiques, helping competitors identify their strengths and areas for improvement. Engaging with fellow competitors also offers informal feedback and the opportunity to learn through observation, fostering a collaborative learning environment.

Recognition and exposure are other significant benefits. Winning or placing in competitions brings accolades and prestige, enhancing resumes and opening doors to future opportunities. Competitions often attract media attention, providing participants with publicity that can lead to further prospects. Moreover, these events are excellent networking venues, allowing musicians to connect with industry professionals, educators, and other musicians. Building a community of like-minded individuals fosters both friendships and professional relationships.

Competitions also contribute to personal growth. Successfully participating builds self-confidence and reduces performance anxiety, while the process teaches resilience and the ability to handle both success and disappointment gracefully. Educational and career advancements are common outcomes, with many competitions offering scholarships, grants, or financial incentives that support further education or career development. Success in these events can lead to advanced studies, professional gigs, and teaching opportunities.

Creativity and interpretation are encouraged in competitive settings. Competitors often bring their unique interpretation to their performances, fostering artistic development and broadening their repertoire. The goal-setting aspect of competitions provides a clear objective, enhancing motivation and dedication to practice. Many participants find the process of preparing and performing deeply rewarding and enjoyable, reigniting or deepening their passion for music.

Potential Drawbacks of Participating in Music Competitions

While the benefits of participating in competitions are substantial, there are also some potential drawbacks to look out for. the high-stakes nature of competitions can induce significant stress and performance anxiety, particularly in younger or less experienced musicians. The pressure to meet high expectations, whether self-imposed or from teachers and parents, can lead to undue stress. The time commitment required for competition preparation is considerable and can detract from other activities and responsibilities. Balancing competition preparation with school, work, or other commitments can be challenging and exhausting. Financially, the costs associated with entry fees, travel, accommodation, and other expenses can be burdensome for some families.

There is also a risk of burnout due to intense preparation. The physical and mental fatigue from rigorous practice can lead to a loss of interest in music over time. The competitive nature of these events can result in an overemphasis on winning rather than appreciating the intrinsic value of music and personal growth. Failure to win or place well can negatively impact self-esteem and confidence, especially in younger participants.

Negative experiences can also arise from perceived or actual biases in judging, leading to frustration and a sense of injustice. Constantly comparing oneself with others can be demotivating and foster feelings of inadequacy. Additionally, the focus on technical perfection can sometimes overshadow the expressive and emotional aspects of music, and preparing specific pieces for competitions might limit exposure to a broader range of repertoire and musical styles. Intense and prolonged practice sessions increase the risk of physical strain or injury, particularly repetitive strain injuries. External pressure from teachers or parents can also create a negative experience if not managed carefully!

In conclusion, while music competitions like the Asian Supreme Drum Competition and the Fifth Amason Award Pop Piano International Competition offer numerous benefits, including skill enhancement, recognition, and networking opportunities, they also come with potential drawbacks. Participants and their support systems should be aware of these challenges and should always strive to maintain a balanced, healthy approach to competitive music. Managing stress, setting realistic goals, and focusing on the love of music can help mitigate some of these potential negatives, ensuring a positive and enriching experience. With the right mindset and a healthy competitive spirit, participating in music competitions can definitely be a fruitful and enriching journey.

Breathing New Life to the Beloved White Piano at TTSH

The iconic white piano at Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) just got an upgrade! – Cristofori first donated a white piano to TTSH 17 years ago and that piano went on to become an unofficial landmark of the hospital premises. In 2024, the occasion of the Hospital’s 180th Founder’s Day Celebration was commemorated with the donation of a brand new Kayserburg GH160 5′ 3″ Heritage Series Baby Grand Piano – in white, of course!

The Kayserburg GH160 baby grand piano seamlessly blends vintage elegance with modern precision, and in a glossy white finish, it is truly a stunning sight! This piano, designed by European experts and crafted with German ingenuity, sets a new standard in fine musical craftsmanship. Key features include solid maple capped bridges, cross-laminated hard rock maple pin blocks, and premium Roslau strings from Germany. Its tapered soundboard, made from European quarter-sawn spruce, ensures superior dynamic range and sustain. The piano also boasts Renner hammers for resilience and cut-thread tuning pins for precise control. With its exceptional balance and response, the Kayserburg GH160 is perfect for the discerning pianist seeking both beauty and performance, making it the piano of choice for this donation.

The white piano at TTSH has long been a cherished fixture in the hospital’s atrium, inviting the public, staff, and patients to sit and play. It has become a popular meeting spot, with people often saying, “I’ll see you at the white piano.” This beloved instrument has even earned its own hashtag on Instagram, affirming its integral role in the hospital community. You can find various videos of the white piano on the TTSH Instagram profile story highlights. The iconic white piano at TTSH also features in some videos circulating online, and is listed on directories of Public Pianos available in Singapore.

On 6 February 2006 Tan Tock Seng Hospital’s Art of Healing programme was launched by then-Minister for Health Mr. Khaw Boon Wan, with the aim to transform the hospital environment into a warm and welcoming place of healing by incorporating the arts as a form of therapy. This initiative brings art exhibitions and performances to soothe patients and aid their recovery. While not a substitute for conventional medicine, the program allows patients to enjoy art during their stay. Additionally, it supports the local arts scene by partnering with various arts and performing groups, providing a multicultural experience for patients and staff.

This initiative aligns with a growing trend in healthcare settings worldwide to incorporate the arts into patient care. Hospitals are increasingly recognizing the positive effects of music and other art forms on well-being. At TTSH, the white piano is often played by volunteers, including talented musicians from the community, hospital staff, and even patients who wish to share their love for music.

As it is Cristofori’s mission to to fill the joy of Music into every household through holistic musical education and quality musical instruments, there was no question in our mind to support and be a part of TTSH’s efforts to bring music and to give back to the community.

Moving forward, the new Kayserburg GH160 will be the centerpiece for all music-related events at Tan Tock Seng Hospital. Stay Tuned to our Blog to watch a short interview with Trudy Zhang, the PIC for the Art of Healing Program at TTSH.

To see the Kayserburg GH160 in action, pop over to Kayserburg Music School (KMS) at 70 Stamford Rd, #B1-46 SMU Li Ka Shing Library Building, Singapore 178901 – you can call ahead for an appointment too! Just reach out to KMS via call or WhatsApp to 8766 0632.

George Harliono to Grace the Victoria Concert Hall on 30th August 2024

Renowned British-Indonesian concert pianist George Harliono is set to captivate audiences at Victoria Concert Hall in Singapore on 30th August 2024. Known for his exceptional talent and musicality, George Harliono has garnered international acclaim, enchanting listeners worldwide with his masterful performances.

A Prodigy’s Journey: From a Worn Family Piano to Global Stages

George Harliono’s musical journey began at a young age, inspired by his older brother’s violin playing and their shared exploration of a well-worn family piano. Despite its poor condition, this instrument ignited George’s deep passion for music. His mother soon found a piano teacher to guide him, recognizing his dedication to practice and experimentation.

“In our home, we had a very old upright piano, I think it cost £100. It was really terrible, almost untune-able,” George recalls. “My brother and I would play around on it, making a terrible noise until my mum got so fed up with it that she found a local piano teacher to help tame us! I found that I enjoyed playing piano and would spend hours practicing and trying out new things. My parents are not at all musical, so they didn’t really know what to do with me when I became more and more interested in playing.”

Influential Mentors and International Acclaim

George’s first piano teacher, Claire Swainsbury, introduced him to the joy of playing, while renowned figures like Vladimir Ashkenazy and conductor Alexander Sladkovsky later played crucial roles in shaping his artistic path. Despite the limited appreciation for classical music in the UK compared to countries like Russia, George has achieved remarkable milestones.

In 2023, George Harliono won the Silver Medal at the prestigious XVII International Tchaikovsky Competition, further propelling him to international acclaim. His musical journey began at the tender age of nine, marking him as a prodigy with an extraordinary future. Over the years, he has amassed numerous accolades, including top prizes from the Grand Piano Competition in Moscow and the Sendai International Music Competition.

George Harliono’s stellar career features performances at renowned concert venues and collaborations with esteemed artists such as Denis Matsuev and Valery Gergiev. His award-winning rendition of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5 in Moscow stands as a testament to his exceptional talent and musicality.

A Mesmerizing Recital at Victoria Concert Hall, Singapore

George Harliono’s highly anticipated recital at Victoria Concert Hall in Singapore promises to be a mesmerizing experience. With his distinctive British-Asian heritage, George effortlessly navigates through various musical styles. The program will feature intricate French compositions, the raw emotional power of Beethoven, and the exotic charm of Glinka’s works. Each performance offers a glimpse into George’s versatile artistry, ensuring an immersive and unforgettable musical journey for the audience.

Attendees can look forward to an evening where passion and piano converge, showcasing the multi-faceted depth of George’s talent. His ability to evoke a wide range of emotions and command over diverse musical genres is sure to leave the audience deeply moved and musically satisfied.

Don’t Miss George Harliono Live in Singapore

Don’t miss the opportunity to witness George Harliono’s brilliance live. His recital promises not just a performance but an evocative journey through the landscape of classical music, revealing the true artistry of this remarkable young pianist.

About the Artist: George Harliono

Born in Hackney in the UK, British-Indonesian pianist George Harliono first embarked on his remarkable musical journey with an invitation to perform his first solo recital at the tender age of nine. Since then, he has captivated audiences worldwide, performing in prestigious venues across the UK, USA, Europe, and Asia, including Wigmore Hall, The Berlin Philharmonie Kammermusiksaal, The Royal Albert Hall, and Chicago Symphony Centre.

In 2023, George’s talent was further recognized with the Silver Medal at the XVII International Tchaikovsky Competition. His career highlights include recording Beethoven’s Piano Sonata at the Southbank Centre in London and a live broadcast performance of Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No.1 in the Great Hall of The Moscow Conservatory on Russian national TV.

George has shared the stage with eminent artists and renowned conductors, establishing himself as a regular performer with various orchestras. His awards in numerous international competitions attest to his exceptional musical abilities.

Recently, George performed Beethoven Piano Concerto No.5 at Zaryadye Concert Hall in Moscow and Liszt Piano Concerto No.1 at the Frankfurt Alte Oper. He was also a featured artist at the Duszniki-Zdrój International Chopin Piano Festival in Poland.

Studying under Professor Pascal Nemirovski and having taken masterclasses with distinguished musicians, George’s development as an artist is also nurtured by conductor Alexander Sladkovsky. His talent has been praised by the acclaimed pianist Denis Matsuev, highlighting George’s promising future in the classical music world.

Dazzled and Amazed: A Spectacular Showcase of Talent at Cristofori’s Got Talent 2024

May 25th, 2024 certainly became a memorable day with the comeback of Cristofori’s Got Talent! With a post-pandemic hiatus finally coming to an end, the Competition made its comeback, and peaked in epic style at the Grand Finals held at the Level 3 Rooftop Garden at Junction 8 Shopping Mall.

The day opened out with the Solo Children’s category ages with 30 adorable finalists showing off their skills in music, and dance, with creative costumes, props, and skits integrated into their performances. Top winner Theodora Lee gave a touching performance of  “Lemon Tree” in English, and Chinese singing and playing the keyboard and ukulele, and 2nd prize winner Nathaniel Hoe was electrifying on the drums, and 3rd place Choo Heng Lee showed off his piano skills performing “Caballos Españoles” on the grand piano.

The Open Category followed with an amazing array of talents from piano players and violinists, to guitarists, multi-instrumentalists, and singing too! First prize winner (and also Best in Costume) Mahiir was a show stopper with his powerful, emotional vocal performance of Ray Charles’ “A Song For You”. 2nd prize winner Tan Jing Yang dazzled on the piano with the William Tell Overture, and Claire Tay in 3rd place gave a rousing rendition of V. Monti’s “Czardas”, giving us quite a well rounded selection of musicians for the Open Category.

The afternoon session was no less exciting, starting off with the Solo Teens category with a variety of numbers – live looping, guitar and vocals, piano and vocals, drums, piano and dancing to some Western pop and Chinese pop songs, and even some classic K-pop faves. Tori May clinched the top prize in this category with a heartfelt cover of Colors of the Wind, and drummers Jonathan Lee, and Ryan Foo claiming 2nd and 3rd prize respectively, both gave energetic and crowd-pleasing performances.

The day wrapped up with a fabulous bang with the Group Category. The band ensembles truly brought their game to the grand finals with some of the best performances we have seen so far at Cristofori’s Got Talent! Ultimately, the top prize was won by the group “The Fragmented” with their rock-tinged rendition of “The Greatest Show”, the band was tight, and the lead and backup vocals completely in sync! “Drumstruck Ensemble” clinched the 2nd prize with their heart-thumping piece “Nevs”, and 3rd prize went to “Jo Rigid Home Boyz” dance crew quartet with their specially curated and choreographed edgy K-Pop mashup they titled “Resurrect the Underdogs”.

Prizes for Most Popular (selected by audience vote), and Best Costume were awarded too! It was indeed refreshing and a lot of fun seeing participants show their creativity in their costume choices with a lot of DIY in the mix.

All-in-all, our comeback run was a resounding success made possible by the support of our students, parents, crew and the whole Singapore community. We extend our most sincere and heartfelt gratitude to everyone who helped to make the Cristofori’s Got Talent vision of creating a platform for everyone to share their talents and shine on stage come to life.

An Enlightening Journey with Hong Xiang and C. Bechstein

On May 21st, 2024, Bechstein Music World hosted an enlightening C. Bechstein Lecture-Recital featuring the talented Hong Xiang, and special guest C.Bechstein Director Mr. Ralf Dewor.

Hong Xiang, a 30-year-old emerging pianist from Singapore shared personal insights about his identity as a pianist and his profound thoughts on the pieces he included in his repertoire. Hong Xiang’s recital programme featured works by Bach, Schubert, Debussy, Fauré and the contemporary composer Joe Hisaishi. A special highlight was Hong Xiang’s own arrangement of a theme from “Spirited Away,” showcasing his creativity and deep connection to the pieces he performs. The recital culminated in a performance Fauré’s “Sicillienne, for Cello & Piano, Op.78, where Hong Xiang was joined by his brother, Hong Qing, on the cello, adding a rich, collaborative dimension to the programme.

The day’s program was further enriched by the presence of Mr. Ralf Dewor, Director of C. Bechstein Pianofortefabrik (AG). Mr. Dewor remarked that Hong Xiang’s performance, both his solo playing and his duo program with his brother on cello, were particularly inspiring for him, and he reflected that it was witnessing performers like them play that made him feel so proud to be in this industry upholding the tradition for future generations. He then provided invaluable insights and shared his knowledge into the intricate characteristics that define the sound and identity of all pianos, including the C. Bechstein. He explained how these qualities—clarity, color, power, rhythm, dynamics, melody, and harmony—are meticulously balanced to create the distinctive sound of each one. It is then up to the  player, or the listener to choose the best piano for them, or for the music being played.

Hong Xiang and Mr. Dewor demonstrated these principles through the live performances, allowing the audience to experience firsthand the rich, complex sounds that different pianos can produce. During Hong Xiang’s performance, he specifically chose the C. Bechstein D282 Concert Grand for majority of his pieces, accentuating such passages as the delicate lines of Debussy’s “Claire de Lune”, and the powerful dynamic shifts of the selected movements from Schubert’s “Wanderer Fantasy”, and a Seiler 278 Konzert series Concert Grand for the Hisaishi piece “Inochi no Namae”, which he may have felt suited the feeling of a warm embrace the piece exudes. Both pianos from companies founded in the same era, as Mr Ralf emphasized, were both excellent instruments in their own ways, with different characters and identities.

Every piano should evoke and answer the following questions for each individual: Does this piano do what I want? (Expressive power), Does it provoke new ideas in me? (Inspirational power), Does this instrument respond to me and do what I want it to? (Capacity and reserve), and What does this piano create for me, for my students, or for the music?

These in mind, the lecture-recital highlighted the nuanced craftsmanship involved in piano making. Carl Bechstein’s vision was to merge the robust, dynamic elements of sound with delicate, expressive qualities.  This balance is challenging to achieve, as it requires both high tension for clarity and power, and elasticity for color and expressiveness. Bechstein’s connection to Franz Liszt was also highlighted, with Liszt being notorious for destroying pianos(!) Bechstein needed to create an instrument that was sturdy enough to withstand the abuse, but was also responsive enough to bring out the virtuosity of Liszt’s playing. It is thanks to working with Liszt that he was able to achieve this harmonious blend of strength and delicacy that gives Bechstein pianos, and all the pianos in the C. Bechstein family, their unique voice.

The legacy of Carl Bechstein lives on today. His innovative approach to piano construction earned him the Winner’s Medal at the London World’s Fair in 1862, a testament to the exceptional quality and playability of his pianos. This historical context underscored the enduring excellence of Bechstein pianos, which continue to inspire musicians around the world.

This C. Bechstein Lecture-Recital  was more than just a performance; it served as a deep dive into the intrinsic connection between music, the piano, and the unique interaction each pianist has with this remarkable instrument. Through this event, Mr Ralf Dewor, with the help of Hong Xiang, hoped to impart to attendees a greater appreciation for the intricate relationship between the music, a pianist and the piano itself, and the timeless beauty of the music they create together.

This Lecture-Recital was organised and presented by Bechstein Music World Singapore. Be sure to follow them on their Facebook and Instagram Pages for the latest updates on more concerts and other events for 2024!
